Nordiq Canada has awarded Évènements Nordiques Gatineau Nordic Events (ENGNE) an Eastern Canada Cup event. It will be held at Nakkertok on December 15-17, in conjunction with the Candy Cane Cup, the December fixture for the local cross-country (XC) ski community. This will be the first major Eastern XC-ski race of the season.
Over 500 skiers from across Eastern Canada are expected to take part in this event, and many of the same skiers, and more, will return to Nakkertok in March for the Nordic Canada Ski Nationals, which will be held March 10 to 16th, 2024. The National Championships were last held in Gatineau in 2019.
Pierre Millette the head of the organizing committee said: “Local skiers Antoine Cyr from Gatineau and Katherine Stewart-Jones from Chelsea are the leaders of the Canadian Team in Europe, which shows Ottawa/Gatineau is a hotbed of skiing in Canada. The fact that we were again awarded two of the highest-level races in Canada at this time, reflects the confidence Nordiq Canada has that our region can be counted on to run very well-organized competitions.”
While Antoine and Katherine are not expected to attend the Candy Cane Cup, it will be an opportunity for the next generation of Canadian stars to share the podium. For example, last year’s Candy Cane double gold winner, Leo Grandbois is part of the Canadian Team now racing on the World Cup circuit in Northern Scandinavia.
While snowfall to date have been sparse in the region and temperatures have been mild, Nakkertok’s artificial snow loop has been open for over a week and it is expected to be in good shape for the races, despite the weather.
Athletes will vie for over $11,000 of prize money at the Eastern Canada Cup in December funded by the “ A Hall Mark of Excellence ” program and the local organizing committee
We will provide an event schedule, and list of participants, closer to the event. Media are invited to visit the Nakkertrak in the coming weeks, and to cover the event December 15 to
17. Out of town racers will be arriving on Thursday, December 14.
